I'm ahving to reboot it almost every day. Keeps flicking pages and freezing on me. Had it for about 16 months. Don't know if I can live without it! When it finally gives up the ghost (won't be long now) will try ringing Amazon - I'm outside warranty but hear they sometimes discount or give freebies - do I have to beg or cry or something! Certainly can't afford a new one at moment damn it waaahhhh

Ring them sooner rather than later would be my suggestion. It could last another 6mths and thats 6mths further down the track. Amazon are all willing to be the best customer service providers at the moment they may not be in the future.

You can contact Amazon and chat to them live by email, the typing was a bit slow but the service was fantastic. Have you tried a reset!
Email them direct from their Amazon site and you will have contact with the hr. I cabn't fault their backup service at all, it will be interesting to see what their after warrenty help is.

16 months, how long are they expected to last!I would hope my Kobo held out longer than that. that is shocking.

Reader_amm5, May 5, 2012, 5:42 pm

I've been wondering about lifetimes.what's the longest anyone here has had their original!

Reader_elliehen, May 5, 2012, 5:49 pm

You would reasonably expect it to last longer that 16 months so the consumer guarantees act should be on your side - having said that Kindles aren't very expensive.

Reader_russ18, May 5, 2012, 5:52 pm

well I don't think they are inexpensive, most of the named e readers aren't,Not like disposbale $50 cell phones, and i would expect a lot longer than 16 months

A friend of mine had had his Kindle for over 2 years when he dropped it a couple of weeks ago and cracked the screen.Naturally he was pretty guttered.I told him to contact Amazon as I was sure they would offer him something and he initially didn't believe me with it being so far out of warranty.Upshot is, he contacted them through the chat function and they offered him a brand new one of the same model for NZ$75 which he gladly accepted. In true Amazon awesomeness, it arrived in 4 days.My friend was completely blown away by this because a) it was out of warranty and b) he fully admitted to dropping it which caused the damage.

The Consumer Guarantees Act only applies if it is New Zealand trader/seller.

If you're buying from an overseas site, check which law applies to the contract you're entering into. In theory, you should have the protection of the relevant country's consumer laws, but it could be difficult to sort things out if something goes wrong (although from everyone's experiences I have heard of, super easy with Amazon).

Reader_fairytonic, May 5, 2012, 6:03 pm

Well that's subjective isn't it, don't see a piece of consumer electronics starting from $189 as expensive.

Reader_russ18, May 5, 2012, 6:32 pm

Should have bought from Dick Smith then.

Reader_russ18, May 5, 2012, 6:32 pm

That's really good! I dropped my original a couple of weeks back and although it still worked, the 3G component (which I use a lot) would no longer function. I just bought another one, I didn't ask Amazon for help because it was out of warranty, I had dropped it AND because it DID still work, in all ways but one - it was only my niggle about the 3G that led me to buy another one.

Reader_trader_spence, May 5, 2012, 6:38 pm

It's awesome eh! And because he got such good service he decided to buy a second one at full normal price for his partner so she wouldn't keep pinching his.I'm sure this is one of the strategies behind Amazon's outstanding service - keep 'em happy and they'll keep coming back for more.

Reader_fairytonic, May 5, 2012, 6:51 pm

I think you are right, I've now bought 4 Kindles from them in total and wouldn't hesitate to recommend them to anyone else because they really are fab at customer service :)

Reader_trader_spence, May 5, 2012, 8:36 pm

I also think that a factor with Amazon's fabulous customer service is that if their customers no longer have their Kindles then they're going to stop buying their ebooks. They seem to bend over backwards to make sure we all have a working Kindle to spend more money on their books.Well that's my theory anyway.I've yet to experience such wonderful customer service from any company - ever!

Reader_leicester2, May 5, 2012, 8:42 pm

I would try a reset that wipes everything on it

Reader_tamzyn5, May 5, 2012, 10:26 pm

Gosh, well if anyone feels like buying me one in the spirit of keeping up the good service done by Amazon, then who I am to stop you!

Reader_jomatt1, May 5, 2012, 11:47 pm

I totally agree, I think the Kindle is probably reasonably inexpensive to produce compared to the profit they make on ebooks sold over the life of the unit, so it makes sense to look after the users.

Reader_trader_spence, May 6, 2012, 8:11 am

I am thinking Kobo could be taking a leaf out of their books now, as the sservice I have had from them is beyond exceptionalIt is like the service Iread about from Kindle

Reader_amm5, May 6, 2012, 8:36 am

What is a reset! Is that the same as holding it on"off" for 20 sec so you get the tree page come up! If so thats what I meant by reboot - it clears the problem up but I'm having to do it daily. thanks
